How do I reserve a kitten?

Start with a WhatsApp enquiry — a quick chat about what you are looking for, so we can see whether we have a suitable kitten for you. Colour, sex and timing all matter, and the right kitten is not always available straight away. If it looks like a good match, we arrange a viewing in person — never a video call — so you can meet the kittens properly. Once you have found yours, a deposit secures your chosen kitten, or pair, right through to collection day.

When can kittens leave for their new homes?

Never before 12 weeks. By then every kitten has completed their vaccinations, been health-checked by our vet, microchipped, and is fully weaned, litter trained and confidently socialised.

What health testing do you carry out?

Our queens come from PKD-tested, GCCF & TICA registered Championship lines, and across the programme we carry out DNA testing — including Wisdom Panel DNA and Langford DNA testing. Every kitten is vet-checked twice, vaccinated and microchipped before leaving, and comes with five weeks of free Agria pet insurance, provided through the GCCF.

What comes with my kitten?

A comprehensive kitten pack: GCCF registration papers, vaccination record, microchip documents, five weeks of free insurance provided through the GCCF, a blanket that smells of mum, their favourite toys, and enough of their current raw food for a gentle transition.

What are your cats and kittens fed?

Accepted Answer

A raw diet, from day one. Every cat in the house — queens, stud and kittens alike — is raw fed, and kittens are weaned straight onto it. It is the closest thing to a cat's natural diet and we see the difference in coats, condition and digestion. Each kitten goes home with a supply of their current raw food and clear guidance, so the transition to your home is seamless whether you continue raw or move them across gradually.

Do your cats go outside?

Yes — safely. Our cats are free to roam both inside and out, with a protected, enriched garden where they can climb, sunbathe and take the air without any of the dangers of roaming. Kittens are raised indoors underfoot, and we recommend the same life to our families: safe indoors, with secure, enriched outdoor access.

Are your kittens raised with children and other pets?

Yes — our cats live in our family home, underfoot and thoroughly involved in daily life. Kittens are handled from day one and grow up around visitors, doorbells and the general commotion of home. They arrive in your home already confident.

Question 8

Why do you only breed when kittens are reserved?

Accepted Answer

We only breed when there is genuine demand — ideally, a queen is mated only once at least two kittens are already reserved. It is the heart of responsible breeding: no unnecessary litters, and no kittens waiting for homes that may never come.

Do you ship kittens or deliver?

Accepted Answer

We never ship kittens as cargo. We encourage collection in person — meeting you matters to us — though we can sometimes arrange personal delivery within mainland UK for a reasonable mileage fee.

Can we visit before reserving?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — and we would encourage it. Once the kittens are past five weeks we welcome viewings by appointment, so you can meet them in person and see exactly how they are raised. Meeting a kitten in person, rather than over a video call, is by far the best way to choose.

What if circumstances change after I take my kitten home?

Accepted Answer

Our cats are family for life. If your circumstances ever change — at any age, for any reason — your Muggles Mittens cat comes back to us. No Muggles Mittens cat will ever need a shelter.

Why are more kittens available in summer?

Accepted Answer

Cats are seasonal breeders, meaning queens often come into heat as the days become longer. Kittens conceived during spring are therefore commonly ready for their new homes during summer and early autumn.

What is allergen-reducing cat food?

Accepted Answer

Most cat allergies are caused by a protein called Fel d 1, which cats spread onto their coats while grooming. Certain foods use a special egg-derived ingredient that helps neutralise some of this protein, potentially reducing the amount released into the home.

It does not make a cat completely hypoallergenic, but it may help some allergy sufferers.

Why are play and companionship important?

Cats need daily play, exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Many kittens also benefit from growing up with a sibling or another friendly cat, especially when their owners work long hours.

A single cat can still thrive when given plenty of attention, enrichment and interactive play.

Should my British Shorthair be indoors or outdoors?

Accepted Answer

British Shorthairs are friendly, calm and trusting, which can make unrestricted outdoor access risky. We recommend indoor living with safe outdoor access through a catio, enclosed garden or secure balcony.

Where a cat is allowed outside, we strongly recommend supervised outdoor time and using a lightweight cat tracker on a quick-release collar, alongside an up-to-date microchip. A tracker is useful, but sadly not a force field against traffic, theft or a cat making terrible life choices.

Controlled outdoor access gives your cat fresh air and stimulation while reducing the risks of traffic, theft, fights, predators, poisoning and getting lost

What are the risks of free roaming?

Outdoor cats may face traffic, dogs, fights, poisons, theft and becoming trapped in sheds or garages. Pedigree cats may also be approached or taken because of their friendly nature and appearance.

Controlled outdoor access offers a safer compromise.

Question 17

What is a catio?

Accepted Answer

A catio is a secure outdoor enclosure that allows your cat to enjoy fresh air, sunshine and outdoor stimulation without roaming freely.

A good catio should include strong mesh, a secure roof, shelves, hiding places, shade and easy access back into the home.

What should I consider when cat-proofing my garden?

Cat-proof fencing usually uses inward-facing netting, rollers or angled barriers around the garden boundary. Check for gaps around gates, sheds, trees and adjoining fences because cats inevitably discover the one section humans forgot existed.

Use strong, weather-resistant materials and inspect the system regularly for damage.

Are cat trackers worth using?

Accepted Answer

A tracker can help locate a missing cat, but it should never replace microchipping or secure boundaries.

It can also show where your cat has been, how far they travel and their usual daily routine, which is useful for spotting unusual behaviour.

Choose a lightweight tracker attached to a properly fitted quick-release collar, and always keep your cat’s microchip details up to date.

How much grooming does a British Shorthair need?

British Shorthairs have a dense, plush coat but are fairly low-maintenance. Brush them once a week, increasing to twice weekly during spring and autumn when they shed more heavily. 
Start grooming from kittenhood using a soft brush or rubber grooming mitt. Keep sessions short and positive so grooming becomes part of their normal routine.

Should I bathe my British Shorthair?

Bathing is rarely needed unless your cat becomes particularly dirty or your vet recommends it. Check their ears, eyes, skin and claws during grooming, and trim claws approximately every two to four weeks when necessary.

Why shouldn’t I go to a backyard breeder if they’re cheaper?

Accepted Answer

A cheaper kitten can come at a much higher cost later.

Backyard breeders often breed without proper health testing, registration, welfare standards or long-term planning. Queens may be bred repeatedly without enough time to recover, and unsuitable cats may be used simply because they are available, rather than because they have the right health, temperament and pedigree.

This can lead to kittens that are poorly socialised, receive inadequate veterinary care and have a higher risk of inherited health problems or behavioural difficulties.

Responsible breeders work to strengthen their bloodlines over time. They study pedigrees, health-test their cats, choose pairings carefully and learn from each litter. They also remain involved in the breeding community, keeping up with current health guidance and best practice.

Backyard breeders often continue using the same cats and studs without considering the long-term consequences. This is one reason preventable health problems continue to appear within the breed.

You are not simply paying more for a kitten from a responsible breeder. You are paying for health testing, veterinary care, proper socialisation, ethical breeding and lifelong support. The cheapest kitten can very quickly become the most expensive.
